County Court

The County Court is the main trial court in Victoria. Currently judges hear over 11,000 criminal and civil cases a year. The County Court has jurisdiction to hear all indictable offences except treason, murder and certain other murder- related offences.

The County Court handles many of the serious criminal matters that cannot be heard in the Magistrates Courts. The only cases that cannot be heard in the County Court are murder, treason and manslaughter. All other cases can and are often heard in the County Court. 

Judges sit in the County Court as opposed to Magistrates. Unlike the Magistrates’ Court, Judges will often preside over jury trials that are running in the County Court.
